Now that vaccinations against COVID-19 are in full swing in the country, people are becoming more curious about vaccines and their perceived benefits against the coronavirus. Of course, your neighborhood pharmacy is the best place to gain information and learn more about vaccines.

Now, did you know that vaccines are created using various technologies? While all types of COVID-19 vaccines have the same goal, they do so using different mechanisms. Let’s take a look at each of these vaccines, how they work, and how they help the body achieve immunity against the coronavirus.

In the United States, only three types of COVID-19 vaccines are approved by the Food and Drug Administration. These are:

  • Messenger RNA vaccine
mRNA vaccines are created from pieces of the COVID-19 that contain its genetic programming. Once inside the body, the messenger RNA prompts the body to develop a non-virulent copy of the spike protein. The immune system identifies the protein, launches an immune response, and builds a genetic memory of the protein.
  • Viral vector
This type of vaccine combines genetic material from COVID-19 with cells of another virus that has been heavily modified. Like the mRNA vaccine, the viral vector instructs the body’s cells to make a harmless copy of the COVID-19 spike protein to trigger an immune system response.
  • Protein subunit vaccine
This type of vaccine contains pieces removed from the COVID-19. These pieces do not have the genetic code to multiply and are harmless.
